The Old Gal turns 162 years old today, Thursday, December 6th. On this date in 1845 three men, Louis Manigault, Horace Spangler Weiser, and Steven Ormsby Rhea set out to create a new Society at Yale College (later Yale University). It is on this day that Alpha Sigs across the generations and around the world stop to recognize and celebrate the achievements of their brethren and Alpha Sigma Phi herself. As Brother Jared Weller so eloquently stated in a recent communication: "One Hundred and Sixty-Two years ago, three men sat down and created something we all have come to love and cherish. If it weren't for them, and all the men that have carried on the same traditions, we may not have been fortunate enough for our paths to cross, let alone enjoy the bonds and experiences of Brotherhood that we hold dear. On this day, I hope you set aside what differences may seperate us, for each of us has taken on the same obligation to serve the Old Gal and uphold what she stands for. Exemplify our values: Silence keeps what is ours from the outside world...Charity proves that we are capable of more than ourselves...Purity holds that our actions are genuine...Honor is proof that we have the courage to act on our convictions...Patriotism incites us to defend that which we hold to be right... I hope that on this day you wear your pins, or at the very least wear letters. I will be, not because I have the privilege of wearing them, but because I have had the privilege of standing beside Better Men who wear them."
Beta Nu encourages all Sigs to take a moment to reflect on their fraternal experience and the values imparted to them by the Old Gal, and wishes all Brothers a Happy Founder's Day!
